Here is a list of some of our favorite horror movie theme songs that left millions curled up under the covers. The list could go on & on so here are most memorable & a few horrarable mentions. Before the land of sequals and remakes & straight to video had a firm grasp their were some original ideas. That along with a perfect horror movie theme song could leave even the bravest wondering what lay in wait in the parking lot walk back to their car when the movie let out. JAWS (1974) With the E..F.. of a Tuba of all instruments, the most memorable stalking music of all time was blown upon our fear canals. It’s been worked to the limit by Hollywood itself, but still will sit in the back of your mind if your even to mention the word Shark at a beach or on a boat. If you’re young enough & your older brother & his friends are evil enough, even the swimming pool might serve as a tormenting tool. The Oscar winning score from John Williams will forever play on some of our primal fears and unconscious terrors. With its ever chasing tempo faster & faster like the evil tanker truck from "Duel" you just can't escape what we consider one of the most famous horror movie theme songs. HALLOWEEN (1978) Again their able to drag us in with a few simple notes and leave us searching the shadows for Captain Kirk???? The Michael Myers theme song composed by The Bowling Green Orchestra, which consisted of director John Carpenter helped to create what may have been another 70's slasher flick into a franchise horror movie. With Rob Zombies new take on this holiday favorite, it’s sure to keep teenagers cringing many years to come. The innocent strokes of ivory did for this land based stalkers what the #1 did for water. PSYCHO (1960) Left millions of women terrified to take a shower while on a trip any- where. The all string piece from composer Bernard Herrmann had theater patrons everywhere swallowing their hearts. The shower scene is one of the most often used tributes in movie history when it comes to getting a good chill or laugh (Thanks Chevy). This horror movie theme song has had wives everywhere cursing Alfred Hitchcock for giving their husbands the idea to take their most comfortable escape & turn it into a quick means of twisted entertainment. SUSPIRIA (1977) This hauntingly trippy soundtrack performed by Goblin brought this gore fest of a movie to new heights. For true horror connoisseurs, this creepy concerto has become a cult classic. This music has graced the traveling fun houses across America as background accompaniment to a scream like a cat in the closet. Though it is a less know horror movie theme song it can make you turn away from a dark window in a flash if you have had the stomach to sit thru it. NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984) The nursery rhyme from hell that made you afraid to go to sleep again. Freddy's little jump rope anthem served as a platform to fall off into an unsecure slumber. Like many of the other films above not knowing when to quit, you still find yourself questioning your pillow as an escape when bedtime arrives.
The tribal like percussions, lutes, chimes & cellos gave an all ready taboo type movie just the feel it needed. Kryzsztof Penderecki comp- ositions made you look to your walls to make sure there was no shadow doing the Beelzebub bop.
THE OMEN (1976) Jerry Goldsmith's rendering of Ave Satani & it's latin chorus would be an evil requiem to a dark concept. The score would serve as a perfect suit for the son of satan.
SALEM'S LOT (1979) One of the last works of Harry Sukman, the hauntingly eerie thunder of this soundtrack shook the walls for a made for TV movie composition. Making it an art when it came to spooky dead kids scratching on your bedroom window asking to let me in this horror movie theme song gave this vampire movie life. FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980) It may not be actual music but the Cheh,cheh,cheh,cheh,..Mah, mah, mah... whisperings that were the lead into dismemberments for years can not be left out. Some say a clever marketing ploy to sell Jiff,Jiff,Jiff,Jiff..Pop,Pop,Pop or is it Camp,Camp,Camp,Camp..Blood,Blood, Blood. Whatever it is you hear, the campfire is not complete until its vocalization is sounded and a quick scan of your surroundings which can't help but follow. Well that rounds it off just in time for the coming Horrarday which can take all other Holiday saints, kill them & turn them loose on an accepting public which will give you candy for it.
